Jillian Clark was writing this bio as if someone else did, and decided that it felt a bit funny.

I live in Durham, NC— The city that taught me to be curious about people, and turn that curiosity into portraits— with my partner, our dog, and our cat.

The bullet points: I learned to make photographs right as digital cameras became accessible, and graduated from Durham School of the Arts in 2010. (Back then, DSA had funding for two darkrooms; Imagine). Promptly took a “gap year”, which turned into a lot of things (one of them being a photography business, none of them being college).

The influence of other mediums is essential to my work. I’m a lifelong admirer (and participant) in fashion and poetry, and I’ve dabbled in painting. I often think I excelled at making photographs simply because I used to daydream about being a painter. It’s hard to know when to put the brush down, or when to walk away from the canvas. But I always know the precise moment I’ve taken an honest or stirring photograph; I have specialized in portraits for over a decade.
